05 Jun Disruption Along U.S. West Coast Sees Calls For Government Intervention
Continued unofficial disputes over wages, safety, automation and other factors have resulted in continual disruptions, including terminal closures, along the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Elsewhere along the coast, operations appeared to be back to normal, with the port of Oakland stating that the labour shortages, which caused terminal closures, had been resolved.
The industrial action, which started over a year ago, show no signs of abating, with reports indicating that whilst the two sides, The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) have come to a “tentative agreement” regarding automation, there is still no agreement on remuneration.
This continual disruption has several cargo owner bodies requesting intervention from the federal government due to the detrimental impact on retailers and other businesses who are reliant on a robust ports ecosystem.
