15 Aug ILWU workers reach agreement ending weeks of port disruptions along west coast of Canada
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has announced that just shy of 75% of its membership has moved to agree to a four-year contract which will see weeks of uncertainty and disruption along the Canadian west coast supply chain conclude.
Whilst details of the agreement are scant with neither the ILWU nor the employer disclosing negotiations or wage levels, the renewed agreement does address issues such as wages, benefits and training as well as providing certainty and stability for the future of Canada’s West Coast ports.
It is anticipated that it will take several more weeks to clear the cargo backlog at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, which were a consequence of the stalled negotiations.
