Regional Routes To Receive $45M Upgrade

The Australian federal government has announced the dedication of $45 million worth of funding towards 19 priority freight-route safety upgrades, with $25 million allocated to the Bridges Renewal program and the subsequent $20 million allocated to the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP).

The Bridges Renewal Program supports the upgrade of old and worn timber bridges to “modern structures” that can take more weight and are better equipped for major weather events. Current projects underway include Comobella Bridge (Dubbo), Appila Spring Bridge (SA) and Almurta (VIC).

The second initiative, the HVSPP, aims to support improvements to roads that form part of freight routes. This includes the installation of intersections, widening roads, sealing roads and installing safety barriers to increase the productivity and safety of heavy vehicle operations. Current projects underway span Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

As of 1 July 2024 these two programs will consolidate into the Safer Local Road and Infrastructure Program, which will add an additional $50 million of funding to the new program.
