14 Jul Construction causes congestion at DP World Melbourne Terminal
Construction work underway to reconfigure landside truck grids within the Terminal has removed approximately 35% of the landside capacity at DP World’s West Swanson Terminal in Melbourne, resulting in extreme congestion.
This has been compounded by a heavy volume of arriving vessels, which is symptomatic of the busy vessel schedule that is expected to continue well into next month.
Subsequently, some truck turnaround times have blown out to over 4 hours, with transport operators missing vehicle time slots and therefore unable to complete the freight task planned.
In an attempt to manage the congestion DP World WST has subcontracted CMA CGM Quelimane to Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) with a partial discharge of imports at WST.
It is anticipated that once the landside terminal reconfiguration is complete within the upcoming weeks, the flow of vehicles through the terminal will significantly improve, especially considering the enhanced ability to utilise higher productivity freight vehicles.
