05 Aug Truck driver shortage could prove searing for supply chain
According to a recent survey conducted by the International Road Transport Union (IRTU) there is a critical truck driver shortage across all business types and sizes in the Australian domestic trucking sector.
Research shows that over 26,000 drivers are needed to fill the current gaps in the sector, with big fleet operators bearing the brunt of the shortage. Compounding this shortage is the issue of demographics; almost 50% of truck drivers are aged over 55, less than 6% are under the age of 25, the average industry age is 49 years, and over 93% of the workforce is male.
With freight requirements expected to increase over the coming years, the need to develop programs, incentives and career paths that attract a younger and more diverse workforce is imperative to ensure that both the trucking sector and national supply chain continue to thrive.
