Hugh K. Leatherman Marine Terminal to re-open

A settlement has been reached between South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) that will see The Port of Charleston’s Hugh K. Leatherman marine terminal finally re-open.

The agreement reached gives Leatherman’s crane operators a choice to remain state employees or become an ILA member, which is consistent with the other SC Ports. It also increases Charleston’s container handling capacity by a third at a time when the port is working to clear a backlog of five ships waiting to unload.

Leatherman can currently handle 700,000 TEUs, effectively increasing the port’s capacity by one-third with its reopening. With room for two more berths, Leatherman could eventually handle up to 2.4 million TEUs.
