07 Jan $7.2B investment to upgrade Bruce Highway for safer freight transport
The Australian Government will invest an additional $7.2 billion to upgrade Queensland’s Bruce Highway, which is a critical north-south corridor connecting Brisbane to regional centers like Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns.
The Bruce Highway, which spans 1,673kms, supports 62% of Queensland’s population and plays a vital role in passenger, freight, and tourist movement.
The new safety package will fast-track priority projects along high-risk sections, including areas north of Gympie, such as Maryborough to Benaraby, Rockhampton to St Lawrence, Bowen to Townsville, and Ingham to Innisfail. It will also focus on improving road resilience through resealing and rehabilitation to withstand extreme weather events.
This funding is the single largest investment ever into the Bruce Highway and brings the Australian Government’s total outlay for this road to more than $17 billion, helping to create a safer and more resilient infrastructure for Queensland.
