World Container Index Update

The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) saw container spot freight rates on the major east-west liner trades experience another week of decline, as slack demand continued to depress pricing.

The Index decreased 3% to US$2541 per 40-foot container this week. The average composite index for the year to date is US$2883 per FEU, which is US$405 higher than the 10-year average rate of US$2883.

The following trade routes experienced decreases: Shanghai-Los Angeles (-9%), Shanghai-New York (-6%), Rotterdam-Shanghai (-4%) and Rotterdam-New York (-1%).

Conversely, the following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (2%) and New York-Rotterdam (1%).

Meanwhile, rates from Shanghai-Genoa and Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable.

It is anticipated that rates will continue to decrease due to increased shipping capacity.
