08 Apr Greener Shipping Discussions Underway But Undetermined
The recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) ISWG-GHG 18 meeting which aimed to further develop and streamline the draft amendments to MARPOL Annex VI saw discussions around global marine fuel intensity regulations, the economic mechanism’s structure, organisational and operational aspects of the proposed ‘IMO Net-Zero Fund’, revenue disbursement, and potential food security impacts.
The IMO’s 2023 GHG Reduction Strategy commits member states to adopting mid-term measures to reduce GHG emissions from ships in late 2025, including both a technical and economical element.
Whilst there was agreement regarding the economic element, there was divergence on many of the other issues discussed however negotiations continue in a positive and collaborative spirit as there is a communal understanding that much work needs to be done.
