Panama Port Sale Negotiations Still In Progress

As political and regulatory challenges emerge, there is growing uncertainty surrounding the status and date of the Panama port sale, initially reported in our previous newsletter.

Whilst the sale of CK Hutchison’s Ports was expected to proceed on “an expedited basis”, with the Panama Ports Company transaction set to be finalised by 2 April 2025, pending approval from the Government of Panama, there is growing uncertainty surrounding the Panama port sale as reports indicate that the deal will not go through in the initial week of April, as previously stated.

China’s market regulator has confirmed it will conduct an antitrust review on the deal in accordance with a law to protect fair competition and safeguard the public interest.

However, this does not mean that the deal is cancelled, as negotiations for the overall deal that covers a total of 43 ports in 23 countries is still underway on an exclusive basis between CK Hutchison and the consortium.
