Asia-America box traffic hits record high

Containerised exports from 18 Asian countries to the US hit a record high of 21.45m TEU last year, according to figures compiled by the Japan Maritime Center.

This peak is attributable to factors such as the Red Sea crisis, a resilient US economy, fears over US industrial action by dock workers and the upcoming tariffs on Chinese imports, which all encouraged pre-emptive front-loading shipments.

The growth of US imports from the various Asian nations includes: China (up 16% to 1.8m TEU), South Korea (up 15% to 1.36m TEU), Japan (up by 8% to 670,000 TEU), Taiwan (up 5% to 661,000 TEU) and India (up 16% to 1.5m TEU).

Whilst the attributing factors have contributed to the record high of 2024, tariffs and the tentative agreement between east coast port workers and terminal operators remain two major ongoing concerns for the supply chain landscape in 2025.
