18 Mar Australian Government Introduces Biosecurity Protection Levy (BPL)
The Australian Government has announced a revised model of agricultural commodity contributions to be paid towards the broader Biosecurity Protection Levy (BPL).
This Levy will be introduced to help fund the cost of Australia’s biosecurity activities including the maintenance of operational and technical functions, the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program, as well as improving the effectiveness and efficiency of biosecurity clearance in cargo pathways.
This levy will see contributions be split between taxpayers (44%), importers (48%), producers (48%) and Australia Post (2%) and will raise $804 million dollars over the next four years and $255m per year from 2027-28 in order to maintain biosecurity policy on a sustainable basis.
