Australian Wine Exporters Cautiously Optimistic of a Trade Reset

With the recent removal of tariffs on Australian hay and barley, hopes are growing for an easing of wine tariffs, which have been in place since 2021.

With an upcoming trip to China scheduled for Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and recent business dialogue between the two countries that included participants from both Australia’s wine associations and leading wineries, there is optimism regarding a trade reset, which will see wine, the last remaining category curbed by tariffs, flow back into China.

A tariff lift would be a resounding relief as prior to the 2021 tariffs China was Australia’s top wine export market, peaking at A$1.2 billion (for the 12 months to January 2020) but plunging down to A$8.1 million (for the 12 months to June 2023).
