15 Apr California Wine Supply Sees Smallest Crush In 20 Years
California, which produces around 80% of wine in the US, is bracing for an unusually small 2024 vintage, with a total red and white grape crush of 2.88 million tonnes, reflecting a 21.7% decrease from 2023.
This represents the smallest crush in California in two decades, when it was 2.78 million tonnes in 2004. Looking forward, it is anticipated that California will have an even smaller crush in 2025.
In addition, there is concern about declining grape prices across the US, with grape prices decreasing by 4.5% on average, a drop that is likely to be exacerbated by the oversupply of unharvested fruit.
Even though this vintage has garnered the smallest crush since 2004, there is still an issue of oversupply across California. Last year saw more than 37,000 acres (14,973ha) of Californian vineyard grubbed up to address an oversupply issue, however many industry parties believe this is insufficient and that a further 50,000 acres (20,234ha) needs to be removed to help bring the industry into balance.
