Capacity record broken at Panama Canal

The containership  MSC Marie has broken a record at the Panama Canal, becoming the largest vessel by TEU capacity ever to transit the waterway.

The MSC Marie is 366 metres long, 51 metres wide and has a maximum capacity of 17,640 TEU and its arrival not only highlights the canal’s ability to handle the largest and most modern ships, but also its importance as a key hub in global trade.

This feat follows the gradual easing of restrictions in the Panama Canal, which as of September has seen the total number of daily reserved slots increase to 36.
