07 Dec China-Aust rates take a tumble
According to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index, spot freight rates between Shanghai and Melbourne dipped to their lowest level since mid-August in the first week of December, reaching 3700FEU.
Given the subdued state of the Australian retail economy this decline was anticipated sooner, however rates were buoyed by extra-loaders still arriving due to unexpected delays.
Although conditions have resulted in decreased rates, there have been a raft of announcements from numerous shipping organisations over the same time period confirming the introduction or increase of various fees and charges such as port dues, port additional, terminal recovery fees, container inspection fees, depot infrastructure levy, and more, most of which are effective at the start of next year.
