China’s Review Of Australian Wine Tariffs Officially Underway

In what is welcome news to the Australian wine industry, China has announced that it will commence the review of tariffs on Australian wine imports from 30 November 2023.

China’s wine tariffs originally came into effect November 2020, and imposed a charge, which started at 107.1% and reached a maximum of 218.4% in March 2021, effectively wiping AUD$2.08billion off the value of Australian wine exports in the year ending 30 June 2022.

This announcement is a positive outcome after several meetings were held between Australia and China in order to help re-establish the relationship between both countries.

It is also the most recent step in the repairing of the trade relationship between both parties, with China already announcing the removal of tariffs on Australian exports such as barley.

This announcement is hoped to be the final roadblock to the resumption of normal wine trade between China and Australia, with speculation that it could be removed as soon as March next year.
