12 Dec Condobolin Rail Track Closure May Result In Surcharge
Due to a significant flooding even in October, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) closed the Condobolin section of the Parkes to Broken Hill line. In response, Pacific National continued to run its services between Sydney and Perth, via Melbourne, to ensure ongoing support for their customers.
This alternate route consists of an additional 16 hours and 400km, and whilst it was initially considered a temporary measure with the extra costs absorbed by Pacific National, subsequent floods and the ongoing track closure, which is now anticipated to last until February 2023, has meant cost absorption is being reassessed.
At this point in time Pacific National has asked ARTC to compensate rail operators for the additional costs during this period of closure, however a response is yet to be received.
In the event that ARTC are not willing to provide compensation, then the introduction of a short-term surcharge to cover the additional costs of fuel and labour may be deemed necessary.
