Container Rates See Worst Q1 Drop In Two Decades

According to BIMCO, average container freight rates for Chinese exports have fallen 28% since the start of the year, marking the worst first-quarter decline in twenty years.

The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) fell from 1548 at the start of 2025 to 1112 at the end of Q1, led by record low spot freight rates, whilst The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) fell 46%, the biggest decline since its inception in 2009.

Although rates did decline sharply, overall freight rates were down just 8% compared to a year ago at the end of Q1 and still stand 39% above those of 2019, however all are mired with a level of uncertainty with regards to the months ahead as the fallout of the US tariff policies is yet to be seen.
