Rail container dwell times across the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle and Tacoma are approximately double what they were earlier this year, creating concern that these dwells may extend further as peak season commences and intersects with the looming threat of ILA industrial action as well as the rail woes in Canada.
Currently, the Port of Los Angeles has seen almost 28% of the rail containers at the port’s six container terminals have an average dwell time of nine days or longer, whilst the average rail container dwell time at Long Beach’s six container terminals is four days.
Over at the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) of Seattle and Tacoma, rail container dwell times have doubled in recent weeks as intermodal container moves spiked amid peak season imports, with a period of six days at Seattle and five to six days at Tacoma.
This rise in dwells can predominantly be attributed to the high consumer demand for Asian imports, as they surged almost 51% in July 2024 from July 2023, and August was shaping up to be a near-record month for total imports from Asia.
