FMC should address shifting dates for dropping off exports

US exporters face unexpected costs and delays due to changes in dates for dropping off exports, which the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) hopes to address with more consistent data.

The FMC has sought input from shippers and other participants in the maritime supply chain for the Maritime Transportation Data Initiative (MTDI) to provide standardised container tracking and other cargo data across US ports.

One of the dominant pieces of input cited is the conflicting and inaccurate information about when containers can be moved and when ships arrive, in particular with regards to the early return date (ERD) for a container to be brought to a port for loading onto a ship, one of many issues which will hopefully reach a standardised conclusion as part of the MTDI.
