26 Oct Global Empty Container Issue Escalates
Recent data from shipping analyst Sea-Intelligence indicates that the global “empty container problem” is intensifying, with the transportation time between cargo being ready for export and the importer taking delivery increasing from an average of 45 days (pre-pandemic) to 112 days at its peak in February 2022.
According to data acquired in August, average transportation time has since reduced to 88 days. This return to shorter transportation times runs subsequent to the manufacturing of new containers in Asia that was needed during periods of pandemic-related container shortages.
The combination of the increased quantity of containers, in conjunction with shorter transportation times will potentially see a pile up in Europe and the USA. According to Sea-Intelligence data, if transportation time is back to ‘normal’ by early 2023, there will be a release of 4.3 million TEU of excess containers into North America, which cannot be expatriated within the planned network operations, potentially overwhelming empty container depots in the US, an issue which is already beginning to materialise.
