ILA industrial action intensifies over automation issue

The International Longshoremen’s Association’s (ILA’s) contract negotiations are intensifying, in what is proving to be a potential catalyst for renewed industrial action in January 2025.

Port automation has proven to be the divisive issue for the negotiating parties, with the ILA strongly opposed to increased automation, in particular the expanded use of semi-automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) due to concerns over job security and national security implications.

In contrast, the United States Maritime Alliance Ltd (USMX) has reiterated the need for, and benefits of modernisation for both workers and the industry, to achieve a more sustainable future.

With an imminent deadline for contract negotiations of 15 January 2025, we will keep you up-to-date with any further developments on our LinkedIn page.
