12 Dec Port Disruptions Create Myriad of Costs for Exporters
Protracted labour negotiations, industrial action and workplace shutdowns attributed to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) are causing unease for exporters across Western USA ports.
As negotiations continue with few signs of progress, there is increasing concern amongst exporters as they attempt to deal with continual disruptions, where even one day of lost work can be costly.
Recently a one-day work stoppage at the Port of Oakland (which was over a sole ILWU employee’s dispute over a travel reimbursement claim) resulted in the shutdown of ports across Stockton, Sacramento and three terminals at Oakland.
This level of disruption is a reflection of the type of turmoil that can be enacted in a work place void of valid contracts, which is the current situation since coast wide negotiations have been all but suspended since October, leaving workers without contracts and its associated arbitration processes.
