07 Jan Port of Newcastle boosts supply chain with vehicle entry service
The Port of Newcastle has expanded its trade offerings, handling over 2,500 passenger and heavy vehicles during the Christmas and New Year period. This follows its October approval by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) as a first point of entry for passenger vehicle imports.
With tightened biosecurity requirements and limited approved ports – previously only one in NSW – consumers have faced delays due to quarantine and supply chain issues. However, the Port of Newcastle is responding to those needs, as vehicle imports is one of three strategic projects the port is focused on, with the others being a container terminal and clean energy precinct.
To date, the port’s 300+ hectares of vacant land, combined with its superior access to national road and rail networks has made it ideally positioned it to accommodate the needs of vehicles such as rail wagons, locomotives and excavators, a benefit which will now be shared by the broader automotive industry.
