Tropical Cyclone Alfred Update

As the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred continue to unfold across Queensland, container terminals and empty container depots are returning to service at the Port of Brisbane.

The ongoing impact of Cyclone Alfred has seen destructive winds, localised flooding, power outages and significant road debris, creating precarious conditions across the board.

However, as the port infrastructure escaped any significant damage from the Cyclone, vessel movements have been able to recommence within the channel area as of Sunday 9th March.

At the Port of Brisbane, the Patrick, Hutchison and DP World terminals reopened as of Monday 10th March, as did most operators across empty container depots including Brisbane Empty Container Depots, ACFS Elink and E-Depot, Gateway, Tyne and others.

It’s imperative to note that the culmination of factors such as the anticipated large volume of rainfall this upcoming week, in conjunction with the cyclone preparation which saw all operations cease at the Port of Brisbane, will mean longer transit times, bottlenecks and extended holding times throughout the supply chain as terminals and businesses re-open and catch up on backlogs this week.

Furthermore, these backlogs and port disruptions are anticipated to reverberate across interstate ports due to factors such as vessels re-routing to avoid Cyclone Alfred, terminal closures, and of course, the impact of Cyclone Alfred and its ongoing impacts which is creating an ever-evolving landscape that is affecting both southern Queensland and northeast New South Wales.
