WA State Government announces $273 million port project

The premier of Western Australia has announced a $273 million investment that will advance the Westport project into its planning phase, marking a major milestone for its development.

This announcement coincides with the release of the Westport Business Case Summary, which recommends relocating container trade to Kwinana by the late 2030s due to the significant risks Western Australia’s economy will face if this project is not completed before the Fremantle Port reaches capacity, including the loss of approximately $5 billion per year due to trade constraints.

The development of a world-class container port in Kwinana will connect the state’s industrial and trade hubs with its international gateway, forming a crucial foundation for future growth, helping to ensure the state’s global economic competitiveness as well as delivering a multitude of benefits including future-proofing their trade capacity, accommodating larger vessels, creating employment opportunities and more.
