07 Dec WA Taskforce Requests Reforms To Sure Up Future Of Coastal Shipping
A series of recommendations have been proposed by the Western Australia Shipping and Supply Chain Taskforce that aim to alleviate supply chain risks for WA through initiatives such as the increased the use of coastal shipping for interstate and intrastate trade, enhanced training and career pathways for WA maritime workers and exploring ways to improve landside supply chain resilience and cost-effectiveness.
These recommendations include taxation law reforms for Australia seafarers, the reduction of commercial restrictions on Australian carriers, incentivising the use of Australian-flagged vessels, the development of a strategic fleet in conjunction with the Australian Commonwealth government and more.
The reform report also works towards granting first point of entry status from the federal government for the Kimberley ports of Broome and Wyndham, as well as a wide-reaching exploration into how shipping can be used to relieve supply-chain weaknesses in Northern Australia and in remote WA communities.
A shipping policy unit will be established within the WA Department of Transport to advance this issue and review the report’s recommendations.
