The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) continued its decline, falling by 4% to US$3349 per 40-foot container in September, which is 68% below the previous pandemic peak of US$10,377 in September 2021.
The average composite index for the year to date is US$4079 per 40-foot container, which is US$1248 higher than the 10-year average rate of US$2831.
The following trade routes experienced decreases: Rotterdam-Shanghai (-8%), Shanghai-Rotterdam (-6%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (-5%), Shanghai-New York (-3%) and Shanghai-Genoa (-2%).
Conversely, the following routes experienced increases: New York-Rotterdam and vice-versa (1%) whilst Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable (1%).
It is anticipated that rates ex-China will continue to decrease marginally in the coming weeks.
