World Container Index Update

The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased by 7% to US$5117 per 40-foot container this week, which is 260% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of US$1420.

The average composite index for the year to date is US$3510 per 40-foot container, which is $768 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2742.

The following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (11%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (7%), Shanghai-New York (3%), Rotterdam-Shanghai (2%) and Shanghai-Genoa (2%).

Conversely, the following route experienced decreases: New York-Rotterdam (-1%). and Rotterdam-New York (-1%). Meanwhile rates from Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable.

Freight rates from China are expected to increase over the coming weeks.
