30 Sep World Container Index update
The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) saw a steep decrease with the index falling by 8% to US$4775 per 40-foot container as at the start of September, which is 54% below the previous pandemic peak of US$10,377 in September 2021.
The average composite index for the year to date is US$4127 per 40-foot container, which is $1313 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2814.
The following trade routes experienced decreases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (-14%), Shanghai-Genoa (-12%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (-3%), Shanghai-New York (-2%), Rotterdam-Shanghai (-2%) and New York-Rotterdam (-1%).
Conversely, the following routes experienced increases: Rotterdam-New York (16%) and Los Angeles-Shanghai (1%).
Freight rates across Asia-Europe are expected to decline over the upcoming weeks.
