World Container Index update

The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased this past week by 6% to US$3533 per 40-foot container this week. The average composite index for the year to date is US$3958 per FEU, which is US$1104 higher than the 10-year average rate of US$2854.

The following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Genoa (22%), Shanghai-Rotterdam (19%), New York-Rotterdam (2%),

Conversely, the following rates experienced decreases: Shanghai-Los Angeles (-12%),  Rotterdam-Shanghai (-1%), Rotterdam-New York (-1%)

Meanwhile, rates from Los Angeles-Shanghai and Shanghai-New York remained stable.

It is anticipated that rates on the Transpacific trade will increase over the upcoming weeks due to the looming threat of the ILA port strike in January 2025, which will inevitably see a rush to ship goods before any potential industrial action gets underway.
