15 May World Container Index Update
The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) decreased by 3% to US$2719 per 40-foot container this week, which is 91% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of US$1420.
The average composite index for the year to date is US$3295 per 40-foot container, which is $586 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2701.
The following trade routes experienced decreases: Shanghai-New York (-5%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (-4%), both Shanghai-Rotterdam and Shanghai-Genoa (-2%).
Conversely, the following routes experienced increases: Rotterdam-New York (3%), Los Angeles-Shanghai (2%) while Rotterdam-Shanghai and New York-Rotterdam remained stable.
A minor decrease in spot freight rates is anticipated in the coming weeks.
