14 Jul World Container Index Update
The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased by 2% to US$4801 per 40-foot container this week, which is 238% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of US$1420.
The average composite index for the year to date is US$3443 per 40-foot container, which is $707 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2736.
The following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Genoa (3%), Rotterdam-Shanghai (3%), Shanghai-Rotterdam (2%), New York-Rotterdam (2%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (1%) and Shanghai-New York (1%).
Conversely, the following route experienced decreases: Rotterdam-New York (-1%). Meanwhile rates from Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable.
Freight rates from China are expected to increase over the coming weeks.
